Budget 2027 for Agriculture: RM6.92 Billion and Where Farm Tech Fits

WSS DevLabs

Budget 2027 allocates RM6.92 billion to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), about RM50 million more than this year. RM4.85 billion is operating spending and RM2.07 billion is development spending.

The stated priorities are more local food production, a more resilient agro-food sector and the welfare of farmers, breeders and fishermen. The money continues work under the National Agro-Food Policy 2021-2030 (DAN 2.0) and the National Food Security Policy 2030.

Where the money goes

The largest item is RM2.62 billion for subsidies and incentives: seeds, fertiliser, pesticides, ploughing wages and rice price subsidies, worth around RM4,300 per farmer. MARDI is also expected to apply for about RM40 million a year for research on strategic crops such as rice, coconut, sweet potato, onion and corn.

Reports on the budget did not mention a separate line for smart farming or precision agriculture. Most of the money reaches farms as inputs, which raises a practical question for every grower.

Are your inputs going where they should?

Subsidised fertiliser and pesticide still cost you labour and time to apply. Without data, you apply them on a calendar, the same way across every block, whether the soil needs it or not.

Simple sensors change that:

  • Soil moisture, pH and EC probes tell you which blocks need water or fertiliser this week.
  • A weather station stops you irrigating before rain and warns you before a dry spell.
  • Leaf photos checked by an AI model catch disease early, so you treat one block instead of the whole farm.
  • Digital records of every input, block and harvest make subsidy claims, audits and buyer questions easier to answer.

Wildlife and farms

The budget also sets aside RM15 million from the palm oil cess for nature conservation, prioritising habitats of the Malayan tiger, Bornean elephant and orang utan. For farms at the forest edge, conflict with elephants, wild boar and monkeys is a daily cost. Cameras with AI detection give your team an early warning so they can respond before the animals reach the crop, without harming them.

A sensible first step

Start with the block that causes you the most trouble. One weather station, a few soil probes or two cameras on the worst boundary will show you within a month whether the data changes your decisions. If it does, scale up.
